About Chiltern Writers

For all writers from across Buckinghamshire and the Thames Valley

Writing can be a lonely occupation - but not if you are a member of Chiltern Writers. We are a friendly group who welcome all writers from beginner to published professional. While we have a number of experienced writers in the group, you don't need to be published to be a member. All you need is an interest in writing.

Some of our members are beginners while others have been writing for a long time.  While some of our members aim to be published, many write simply for their own pleasure.  Our members’ interests cover almost every aspect of writing including novels, poetry, short stories, non-fiction, blogging, magazine features and newspaper columns.

We meet on the third Thursday of each month at St Anne's Hall in Wendover, Buckinghamshire. The meetings start at 8pm and usually finish at around 9.30. Tea and coffee are available at the beginning of each meeting.

The meetings normally follow one of the following formats:

  • A guest speaker talking about a particular aspect of writing

  • A writing workshop, led by a guest facilitator or an experienced CW member

  • A manuscript evening, where members read a piece of their work and the rest of the group offers advice or constructive criticism

Eve Smith - Facts or fiction? The importance of research and world building in speculative fiction

Eve writes speculative thrillers, mainly about the things that scare her. In this world of questionable facts and news, she believes that storytelling is more important than ever to engage people in real life issues. Plaudits for her first three novels include Book Of The Month in both The Guardian and The Times, and having one of them described as "pleasingly terrifying" by New Scientist. Her latest novel, The Cure, explores the catastrophic consequences of a cure for ageing which is hijacked by immortalist obsessives.

Eve's previous job working for an environmental charity took her to research projects across Asia, Africa and the Americas, and she have an ongoing passion for wild creatures, wild science and far-flung places. When not writing, she's to be found chasing across fields after her dog, attempting to organise herself and her family or heading off to explore somewhere new. You can read more about Eve on her website: https://www.evesmithauthor.com
